ACADEMIC ENHANCEMENT GUIDELINES
Purpose: The objective of the extra credit for A.P. UNITED STATES History is two fold. One I want to increase the student’s interest in the subject of European history through the reading of books, watching of movies, and analyzing of documents. Secondly, I want to allow the students some opportunity to do extra credit due to the challenge that an A.P. course presents for many students. In designing the extra credit guidelines I wanted to emphasize the importance of daily work done in class. I also want the students to understand that the best way to succeed in A.P. United States History is a daily commitment on their part to succeed. In order to meet these objectives I felt that it would be good to allow students to earn extra credit in the following ways.
#1- Book Reviews: The book reviews are worth up to 20 points. Students may complete 1 book reviews per semester for a total of up to 40 points of extra credit.
#2- Movie Analysis: The movie reviews are worth up to 5 points per movie. Students may complete up to 2 movie reviews per semester for a total of up to 10 points of extra credit per semester.
Reminder to Students: Please complete all extra credit according to the guidelines on the webpage. Remember your extra credit will be graded according to the level of effort and completeness that you do. If you decide to take advantage of all the extra credit opportunities you can earn approximately 60 points for the semester. Good Luck!!

Possible Movies
17th Century
Black Robe – Actually set in Canada, this movie is about the earliest settlers and their attempts to Christianize the Indians. It involves a little violence and sex, but is mostly an introspective movie set in early colonial times
The New World (2005) - John Smith, Native Americans
The Crucible (1996) – Salem witch trials; Not completely accurate but close.
18th Century
Last of the Mohicans (1992) – -An excellent movie and decent adaptation of the book, it is set during the French and Indian Wars. Notice the relationship between the colonists and the British and the expectations the British had of Colonial obedience. Remember, of course, that this is based on a book that was written in the 1800s, after the Revolutionary War.
1776 (1972) - musicial, American independence
The Patriot (2000) – Revolutionary War-Set in the Revolutionary War, not completely factually accurate but based on factual events. Basically it is a "hollywoodized" epic account.
Jefferson in Paris – I am not sure this is the name of it, but it is a decent movie concerning the 1780s and early 1790s.
